Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC)
Description
Primary sclerosing cholangitis denotes a chronic autoimmune inflammation of the bile ducts that leads to scar formation and narrowing of the ducts over time. It is a prognostic factor for intrahepatic bile duct cancer. Primary sclerosing cholangitis is an idiopathic liver disease characterized by inflammation and fibrosis of the entire biliary tree. The chronic inflammation and injury to ducts may lead to cirrhosis and predispose to cholangiocarcinoma at any site in the biliary tree. Patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis are advised to receive neoadjuvant chemoradiation and liver transplantation.Notes
